certification Policies and Training Institutions

Please click on the heading below for information on Certification, Certificates and Training Providers.

Individuals from diverse careers and specializations are encouraged to take the cross-connection control tester certification course (aka backflow preventer tester certification course). This course is recommended for those in the health, plumbing, engineering, legal or consulting fields, as well as those working in water or wastewater utilities or in building & parks maintenance.

Each student shall be required to purchase a copy of the AWWA Canadian Cross-Connection Control manual, which is the recognized textbook for the course.

To qualify to become certified as a backflow preventer tester, the student shall have completed a course of instruction through an accredited training institution, shall have successfully passed a practical examination, shall have achieved a mark of 75% or higher on the written examination, and shall have applied for certification and paid any applicable fees to their respective Canadian AWWA Section.

On successful completion of a CCC Certification Course applicants will receive a Backflow Testers Certificate from WCS AWWA. The certificate is not a Testers License. There is a fee for the certificate and it is valid for 5 years from date of initial Testers Exam.

A tester shall be required to successfully recertify prior to the expiry of their tester's certificate. Recertification may take place at any point in the 12 months preceding their certificate's expiry date. The tester's certificate expiry date will be extended 5 years from the previous expiry date upon acceptance of the tester's application for recertification.
If a tester fails to recertify before their certificate expires, they shall be required to complete the full tester's course. A new anniversary date will be assigned based upon the acceptance of the tester's application for certification.

If you require a replacement certificate, please send the Replacement Form to info@wcwwa.ca and allow 2-3 weeks for delivery. A $10 fee applies (+GST).

To transfer a valid Backflow Testers Certificate from another AWWA Section, please send in the Certificate Transfer Form  with the required documents to info@wcwwa.ca and allow 2-3 weeks for delivery. A $50 fee applies (+GST).  Note that WCS AWWA will issue a new certificate number and the expiry date will be the same as the certificate being transferred.
